Northwest Missouri State University’s Symphonic Band and Concert Band are gearing up for their final concert of the academic year on Tuesday, April 9. The concert, set to take place at 7 p.m. in the Charles Johnson Theater at the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building, is free and open to the public.

Dr. Katy Strickland, Northwest’s Dennis C. Dau Professor of Instrumental Music, expressed her excitement about the upcoming performance, stating, “These concerts truly have something for everyone, played by a representation of our wide campus population that includes students from almost every major and classification, community members, Northwest band alumni, and area high school band students. It’s a concert for everyone by everyone.”

The Symphonic Band, under the direction of Dr. Strickland, will showcase a diverse repertoire including pieces such as “The Governor’s Own” by Alton Adams, “Courtly Airs and Dances,” “A Simple Song” by Leonard Bernstein, and “Arabesque” by Samuel Hazo.

Meanwhile, the Concert Band, led by Dr. William Sutton, assistant professor of music, will feature works conducted by music education majors Gariel Roller, Paige Rodewald, and Aimen Zieske. The ensemble will perform pieces including “After the Rain” by Matt Neufeld, “Jungle Dance” by Brian Balmages, and “Yorkshire Ballad” by James Barnes.

The Symphonic Band, known for its broad range of music literature, presents two concerts during the spring semester and is open to all Northwest students. On the other hand, the Concert Band, founded in 2021, offers a platform for instrumentalists of various backgrounds to come together and perform music from different time periods and styles.

Both ensembles provide an inclusive space for students, employees, and local residents to engage in musical activities. There are no auditions required to join the Concert Band, making it accessible to anyone interested in participating.

For those interested in learning more about the musical ensembles at Northwest, further information can be found on the university's official website.
