As a seventh-grader, Billie McCoy set her sights on attending Northwest Missouri State University after being impressed by a campus tour. Now in her sophomore year, McCoy is actively pursuing her career goals and gaining valuable experience in teaching and theatre at the university.

McCoy, who has already worked on several Theatre Northwest productions, including a notable role as Clara in “Miracle on South Division Street,” expressed her enthusiasm for the opportunities she has had at the university. "It’s amazing because in a lot of places you don’t get to act until you’re a couple years in," McCoy remarked.

One of McCoy's significant achievements was being named a semifinalist in the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship competition. Describing the moment her name appeared on the screen, McCoy said, "They put up on the screen and we’re all looking, and my name’s right there – Billie McCoy – and we’re like, whoa."

Reflecting on her experience in the competition, McCoy shared, "I was so nervous and I was scared, but I got up there and we did it and our scene went well. The audience was super reactive, laughing, and I did my monologue about the robbery, which people liked."

While McCoy did not advance to the final round of the scholarship competition, she remains grateful for the experience. "It was a very cool experience," she said. "I’m glad I did it because it makes me know, OK, I can try again next year."

Apart from her acting pursuits, McCoy has delved into directing, finding joy in bringing a vision to life on stage. "I love directing because you get to see this whole vision come to life," McCoy explained. "You have this idea in your head and you like the script, and you feel like you can tell a story with it."

Dr. Joe Kreizinger, McCoy's mentor and academic advisor, commended her dedication, saying, "She is so serious and so into it – and just a great, great kid."

Outside of coursework, McCoy is actively involved in teaching theater to young audiences and is set to participate in a program in Kansas City this summer. Looking ahead, she plans to direct Lab Series productions during the upcoming season and aspires to teach in a school setting while continuing her involvement in theater and speech and debate coaching.

McCoy's multifaceted involvement in teaching and theater at Northwest Missouri State University showcases her dedication and passion for the arts and education.
