Students at Northwest Missouri State University interested in dance can find a creative outlet through the Northwest Dance Company. Established in 2001, the organization provides a platform for students to showcase their talent and passion for dance, featuring 60 members who perform every semester.

The spring showcase is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 18 at the Mary Linn Auditorium in the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts Center. Tickets, priced at $10, will be available at the venue's doors on the day of the event. The showcase includes approximately 15 performances choreographed by the company's members, highlighting various dance styles.

Hadley Douglas, the advisor for the Northwest Dance Company, reflected on her time as a former president of the organization, finding it a respite from daily stress. "Dance company was always a strong outlook for me," she said. "Whether I had a good or bad day, it was always just nice to come see my friends and then go dance."

Through leadership roles in the group, Douglas acquired skills in teamwork and time management. "Being able to adapt to any situation, especially getting new students who have never danced," Douglas noted. She emphasizes that the organization welcomes anyone who wants to enjoy dance through their college years.

The organization's vice president, Abby Rock, shared her experience of joining the group motivated by her sister's involvement. "As a member of Northwest Dance Company, I gained more than just experience," Rock said. "I gained growth, leadership and invaluable lessons."

Social events like the recent dance fitness gathering with the Northwest chapter of Alpha Delta Pi sorority and a movie night show that the dance company is more than a performance group. Amanda Rose highlighted this aspect, stating, “Events like mixers and the movie fundraiser allow dancers to make connections with each other outside of practice.”

Rock reiterated the community aspect of the organization: “What makes dance company special to me is the memories, the people and the bonds that you create if you allow yourself to.”
