Northwest Missouri State University will showcase its Jazz Ensemble and Studio Jazz Band in their final concert of the academic year, featuring diverse musical pieces. The event is set for Monday, April 21, 7 p.m., at the Charles Johnson Theater in the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building. Entry is complimentary.

The Studio Jazz Ensemble's lineup includes “Now’s the Time” by Charlie Parker, “Sticks” by Julian Adderley, a traditional Bambuti chant called “Nzembo Na Mvula Zamba,” “Aim High” by Fred Sturm, “Small Wonders” by Rick Lawn, and an arrangement of Radiohead’s “Bodysnatchers.”

The Jazz Ensemble will perform “La Suerte de los Tontos” and “Tres Corazones” by Johnny Richards, “Blue Train” by John Coltrane, “Slo-Funk” by Bob Mintzer, “The Doctor is Out” by Bob Curnow, and “Emancipation Blues” by Oliver Nelson.

Dr. William Richardson, Northwest Professor of Music, leads both ensembles, comprised of 35 members. “We have improvised solos, and students have worked really hard to develop those skills,” Richardson noted. “That’s something that you don’t see in a concert band or in the choir as much.”

The groups focus on cultivating a wide repertoire in jazz and commercial music, hosting events like the Northwest District Jazz Band performance and the Northwest Jazz Festival. Membership is open, with emphasis on jazz style and improvisation, inviting music students and those from other majors to enhance their skills through participation.
