The Northwest Missouri State University chapter of Psi Chi, an international honor society in psychology, has been named a Model Chapter for the 2024-25 academic year. This marks the sixth time in eight years that the chapter has received this recognition.

Among more than 1,150 chapters worldwide, Northwest's chapter is one of only 40 to achieve Model Chapter status this year. The designation acknowledges healthy and active chapters that demonstrate effective communication and cooperation within their organization and with Psi Chi headquarters.

Hannah Nielson, who graduated from Northwest with a bachelor's degree in psychology and served as the organization's president, expressed pride in the achievement. "It is an honor for Northwest’s Psi Chi chapter to be named a Model Chapter this year," Nielson said. She highlighted the hard work and dedication of officers and advisors in creating activities for members to explore different areas of psychology.

Psi Chi aims to encourage excellence in scholarship and advance the science of psychology. Membership requires students to major or minor in psychology and rank in the top 35 percent of their class based on GPA.

"Being a Psi Chi member and officer for two years has greatly impacted me," Nielson stated, noting how her roles as treasurer and president strengthened her leadership skills.

To meet its objectives, Northwest's Psi Chi chapter organized events such as undergraduate research information sessions, wellness fairs, volunteering at New Nodaway Humane Society, and an alumni panel session with the University of Toronto Scarborough. Members also participated in conferences like the Midwestern Psychological Association Conference in Chicago.

Dr. Keely Cline and Dr. Jason McCain serve as co-advisors for the chapter. McCain remarked on the significance of receiving the award: "Being honored with the Model Chapter award demonstrates that our student officer team is committed to upholding our international organization's ideals." Cline added that being recognized reinforces their commitment to promoting excellence in psychology on campus.
