The U.S. Department of Education has renewed its funding for Northwest Missouri State University’s Student Support Services program, securing support for the next five years.
The annual allocation is $361,922, amounting to a total of $1.81 million through 2030. This grant will enable Northwest to assist 180 students each year during this period.
Dr. Shay Malone, assistant vice president of institutional excellence and global engagement at Northwest, highlighted the importance of this funding: “The renewal of this grant is vital to our ongoing commitment to ensuring that all students – particularly those who are first-generation, income-eligible or living with disabilities – have access to the support and resources they need to thrive.” She added that the funding helps in "removing barriers, fostering a sense of belonging, and helping students achieve both academic and personal success."
Student Support Services offers academic and social assistance throughout the academic year for Northwest students identified as first-generation, low-income, or requiring learning accommodations.
Since its inception at Northwest in 1986, TRIO programs have aimed to expand educational opportunities while aiding students on their path to earning higher education degrees. These programs collaborate within the Northwest community to meet the needs of academically capable individuals from first-generation and limited-income backgrounds.
Northwest provides three federally recognized TRIO educational outreach programs designed to offer supportive services enabling disadvantaged background students to enter college successfully and complete their degrees.
