Dr. Jamie Hooyman, the provost of Northwest Missouri State University, has announced her retirement effective December 19. She joined the university in July 2016 as vice provost and became its first female provost in November 2017. In her role, she led academic programming development and assessment while overseeing learning operations, academic quality, and student success.
“Working with the dedicated faculty, staff and leadership across campus has been one of the greatest privileges of my professional career,” Hooyman stated. “I have been continually inspired by the passion and resilience of our people, and I will carry these memories with me into retirement. I know that Northwest will continue to grow and be successful because of the people.”
During her tenure at Northwest Missouri State University, student headcounts increased by 40.9 percent from 2018 to 2023. Hooyman played a significant role in launching and retooling degree programs such as the RN-to-BSN program in 2018 and a Master of Science in Nursing program in 2020.
The university received several honors from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), including the Christa McAuliffe Excellence in Teacher Education Award in 2018.
“When I joined Northwest, I could not have imagined the scope of the transformation, collaboration, challenges and triumphs that would occur during my time here,” said Hooyman. “Through working together... we have achieved significant success – from expanding academic growth... uplifting student learning... completing an academic restructure... All this while facing challenges like COVID.”
Before joining Northwest Missouri State University, Hooyman served at North Central Missouri College from 2006 to 2016 as vice president of institutional effectiveness among other roles. She also taught at the University of Central Oklahoma.
“Working alongside Dr. Hooyman has been a truly rewarding experience,” said Dr. Lance Tatum, President of Northwest Missouri State University. “Our shared commitment to student success created a strong foundation for collaboration... I wish Jamie all the best as she begins this exciting new chapter in her life.”
