Northwest Missouri State University’s Theatre Northwest is set to conclude its 2023-2024 season this spring with a drama based on the true story of female laborers poisoned and killed by a factory's radium-based paint.

The play, titled "Radium Girls," is scheduled for performances at 7:30 p.m. on April 11-13 and 2 p.m. on April 14 in the Studio Theater at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are priced at $12 and can be purchased in advance or at the door with a credit card up to one hour before show time.

Directed by Dr. Joe Kreizinger, a professor of theatre and the chair of Northwest’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts, the play portrays the story of Grace Fryer, a watch dial painter who fought for justice despite the fear of backlash. The women at the U.S. Radium Plant in the 1920s were instructed to prepare their radium-tainted brushes by molding the bristles with their mouths while painting.

Grace Garrigan, a junior speech theatre education major, will take on the role of Grace Fryer. She expressed the significance of the role, saying, "This role means so much more to me and comes with so much responsibility because I want to embody Grace as she truly was and as she deserves."

Kreizinger emphasized the importance of such productions, stating, "I hope audiences are reminded to recognize the power of individual voices – often that of those who may feel they have little voice." He also mentioned the relevance of the play's themes to current societal issues, noting that class struggles still exist.

The play, written by D.W. Gregory, aims to shed light on obsessions with health, wealth, and the commercialization of science. Through a cast that includes Grace's friends, coworkers, lovers, family, attorneys, and scientists, "Radium Girls" offers a poignant and unflinching look at historical events that continue to hold relevance in today's world.
