Northwest Missouri State University is gearing up to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in April with an interactive activity and film screening. The activities are free and open to the public, aimed at honoring the contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders throughout American history.

Dr. Jessie Peter, a senior Northwest coordinator of diversity and inclusion, highlighted the importance of the month, stating, “Each May, we celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month – an opportunity to learn about and pay tribute to the enormous and diverse contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made throughout American history.”

The University will kick off the celebrations with an interactive activity on Thursday, April 11, where participants will have the chance to make traditional leis for graduating Northwest students. Dr. Peter explained the significance of the lei, stating, “A lei is seen as a symbol of pride and accomplishment and a reminder of the bond between the giver and receiver. It also means good luck, hope, and joy for the graduate’s future.”

Following the interactive activity, on Tuesday, April 16, Northwest will screen the film “Finding ‘Ohana,” which follows siblings on a journey to explore their Hawaiian heritage. The film showcases the rich cultural heritage of Pacific Islanders and aims to educate and inspire viewers.

The origins of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month date back to 1978 when it began as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. It was officially designated as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month in 1992 to honor the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States and the completion of the transcontinental railroad. Today, the month-long celebration recognizes the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans, Pacific Islander Americans, and native Hawaiians.
