Belen Vanegas, a senior business management and financial management major from Ecuador working at Northwest Missouri State University, was recently honored as the Midwest Association of Student Employment Administrators’ Diversity and Inclusion Student Employee of the Year runner-up. The recognition was presented to her during the university's Student Employee and Graduate Assistant Appreciation Event.
Paula McLain, who coordinates Northwest’s student employment program, highlighted the significance of the award, stating, "It’s quite a large amount of student employees throughout the United States, so this is a huge honor." She commended Vanegas for her contributions to student employment, particularly in the areas of diversity and inclusion.
Expressing her gratitude, Vanegas said, "I’m very honored to be given this recognition because I like working to help other people and also build my career path at Northwest." She also emphasized how the recognition motivates her to continue making a positive impact on both herself and others.
Vanegas, employed in Northwest’s proctoring center, assists students with scheduling exams and providing support to those requiring academic accommodations. Her nominator praised her empathetic approach towards students with disabilities, highlighting her patience and understanding during high-stress situations like finals week.
