The Northwest Missouri State University Wind Symphony will hold a fall concert on November 18, offering a preview of its upcoming performance at the Nebraska Music Education Association (NMEA) Conference and In-Service Clinic. The event is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Mary Linn Auditorium at the Ron Houston Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free and open to the public.

The program will feature a range of musical styles, including hip-hop, jazz, traditional works, and orchestral transcriptions. Selections include Ketahj Copley’s “Iridessi,” Omar Thomas’s “Shenandoah,” Morton Gould’s “American Symphonette No. 2 Moderately fast” and “Pavanne,” Jess Turner’s “I Know Moonrise,” Alfred Reed’s “Hounds of Spring,” and de Meij’s “Joropo.”

Dr. Kathryn Strickland, professor of music and director of the Wind Symphony at Northwest Missouri State University, explained that this concert serves as a practice run for their NMEA program and helps prepare for different acoustics at the conference venue.

“The beginnings of rehearsals are almost always details,” Strickland said. “So notes and rhythms are like the trees. Now we're at a place where we're able to zoom out and hear the forest. The students are playing more expressively, more creatively, more musically, and it will just elevate the whole performance.”

Faculty soloists Dr. Joseph Tomasso, Dr. William Richardson, and Dr. Jiwon Choi will be featured alongside student soloists Brady Dillon, Clara Viau, Maddie Fenimore, Isaiah Schieber, Spencer Ackerman, and Noah Krisko.

The NMEA Conference draws hundreds of music professionals, educators, and students each year over two days.

The Northwest Wind Symphony is recognized as the university’s top wind ensemble and performs both classic selections from various periods as well as newer pieces for wind bands.
