Northwest Missouri State University music faculty will commence their 2024-25 season with a Labor Day trumpet recital. Professor of Music Dr. William Richardson and accompanist Dr. Jiwon Choi will perform alongside members of the Northwest Jazz Combo.

The recital, free and open to the public, is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 2, in the Charles Johnson Theater at the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building. It will also be live-streamed.

The program includes music for trumpet and piano by Ernst Sachse, George Gershwin, and Hannah Rice, featuring jazz pieces with the Northwest Jazz Combo. Choi will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue" with a performance.

Additionally, the recital will showcase a 2019 composition by Hannah Rice titled "Free To Be," inspired by former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and her landmark case Weinberger v. Weisenfeld from 1975. The piece incorporates quotes from Ginsburg and other notable figures such as Chimamanda Adichie, Angela Davis, Mo’ne Davis, Janet Guthrie, Nancy Lieberman, Megan Rapinoe, Sally Ride, and Malala Yousafzai.

Richardson is a member of both the St. Joseph Symphony and the St. Joseph Big Band; he has been teaching trumpet and various music courses at Northwest since joining in 1999. He also directs the Northwest Jazz Ensembles.

Choi joined Northwest's music faculty in 2016 and has received high marks in international competitions. Her performances as a soloist and collaborative pianist have been held at venues worldwide.
