Northwest Missouri State University President Dr. Lance Tatum recently participated in the U.S. Navy's Distinguished Visitor program aboard the USS George Washington. This initiative invites leaders from various sectors to gain insight into naval operations and life at sea.

Dr. Tatum, along with other civic, education, and business leaders, observed flight operations on the aircraft carrier and interacted with sailors during his visit from September 24-25. He traveled from North Island U.S. Naval Air Station in San Diego to the carrier via a CMV-22B Osprey.

Reflecting on his experience, Dr. Tatum stated, "This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it was exciting to experience everything the Navy’s Distinguished Visitor program has to offer." He emphasized that the program enhances understanding of carrier aviation's role and showcases the rigorous training required for naval readiness.

Dr. Tatum became president of Northwest Missouri State University in June 2023 after serving as senior vice chancellor for academic affairs at Troy University since January 2019. His career at Troy University began in 1998, where he held various leadership roles including vice chancellor positions and dean of the College of Education.

His academic background includes a Ph.D. in sport management from Florida State University, a Master of Science in Education degree in foundations of education, and a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education from Troy University.
