Northwest Missouri State University has declared October as "Exercise is Medicine On Campus Month." The announcement was made by President Dr. Lance Tatum, who signed a proclamation alongside Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education Dr. Tina Pulley. The signing took place at the Memorial Bell Tower in front of students, faculty, staff, and community partners.

Dr. Tatum emphasized the transformative effects of incorporating exercise into daily life, stating that it not only boosts individual health but also fosters a stronger sense of community on campus. He noted that engaging in physical activities together helps build connections that enhance campus life.

The Exercise is Medicine initiative was launched by the American College of Sports Medicine in 2007 with the American Medical Association. It aims to make physical activity assessment and promotion a standard in clinical care, linking healthcare with evidence-based physical activity resources for people of all abilities.

At Northwest, this initiative provides practical applications for students while offering tools to help establish healthy habits within the university community. Last spring, Northwest's commitment to promoting physical activity as a vital sign of health was recognized.

Dr. Pulley stated that "Exercise is Medicine On Campus fosters collaborative relationships" and highlighted its role in promoting physical activity on campuses worldwide. Dr. Terry Long, director of Northwest’s School of Health and Wellness, added that well-being requires community commitment and support for individual and collective wellness.

The Applied Health Science Club was established this fall to support fitness activities at Northwest. Tryce Floyd, a senior applied health science major from Albany, Missouri, serves as its founding president. Floyd expressed hope that designating October as Exercise is Medicine On Campus Month would encourage everyone at Northwest to lead healthy lives.

Following the proclamation signing ceremony, fitness activities were facilitated at the Bell Tower by student and staff representatives from Northwest’s program. A one-mile walk was organized on campus with participation from students, employees, and community members.
