Northwest Missouri State University's School of Education is opening opportunities for students across all majors to participate in a study abroad program in Scotland next spring. This initiative aims to enhance understanding of multiculturalism within educational settings.
The upcoming faculty-led experience, scheduled for May 3-13, 2025, offers participants insights into the Scottish education system and its approach to multiculturalism. Students will engage with local communities and gain practical experience in the region.
Interested students must complete specific courses before participating. Education majors are required to finish Northwest's multiculturalism in education course, while non-education majors can join after completing the multiculturalism in a pluralistic society course, which also counts as a humanities core class.
An informational meeting is set for October 21 at Everett Brown Education Hall to provide further details.
Reflecting on last spring's trip led by Assistant Professor Dr. Ashley Strickland and Associate Professor Dr. Sarah Taylor, student Zayne Cook highlighted the unique learning experiences gained during their visit to Glasgow. The program included visits to museums, castles, schools, and interactions with government officials discussing Scottish educational philosophies.
Strickland emphasized that "schools are so universal" and serve as a valuable lens into different cultures. She noted that such experiences offer students "a safe place to experience something they’ve never experienced before," reinforcing hands-on learning.
Cook described the trip as broadening his understanding of education beyond theoretical knowledge. He valued visiting historical sites like Stirling Castle and appreciated gaining historical context relevant to his future role as a social studies history teacher.
