Northwest Missouri State University's Jazz Ensemble and Studio Jazz Ensemble are set to perform their second concert of the fall semester on November 11. The event, which is open to the public at no cost, will take place at 7 p.m. in the Charles Johnson Theater located within the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building.
Dr. William Richardson, a professor of music at Northwest, leads both ensembles. The Jazz Ensemble is an audition-based group that performs a range of jazz and commercial music. It annually sponsors events such as the Northwest District Jazz Band performance and the Northwest Jazz Festival. The ensemble has hosted several guest artists over the years, including notable names like Jamey Aebersold, Buddy Baker, Jerry Coker, Roger Neumann, Jay Sollenberger, Willi Thomas, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Gary Foster, and Mike Metheny.
The Studio Jazz Ensemble introduces its members to jazz style and improvisation through four annual concerts. Unlike its counterpart, this group does not require auditions for enrollment and welcomes students from all majors. Music education students looking to play secondary instruments or improve their skills are particularly encouraged to join.
