Northwest Missouri State University has awarded the C. Lee Butler Scholarship to two Iowa students for the 2024-25 academic year. Sophie Dorsey from Wiota, Iowa, and Brianna Wilson from Atlantic, Iowa, are the recipients of this scholarship.
Sophie Dorsey, a sophomore majoring in animal science and daughter of Brett and Stephanie Dorsey, is receiving the scholarship for the second year in a row. Brianna Wilson, a senior studying elementary and special education, is the daughter of Renee and Jim Wallace and Mark Wilson. She has been awarded this scholarship for four consecutive years.
The C. Lee Butler Scholarship provides financial assistance to students at Northwest Missouri State University, enabling them to focus on their studies and participate in campus activities that enhance their skills. “This scholarship will help me succeed at Northwest by easing the financial burden placed on my family in order for me to work towards my bachelor’s degree in animal science,” said Dorsey. “This scholarship also allows me to spend more time on my studies, rather than having to work a part-time job during the week to help pay for my tuition.”
Established in 2012 by an anonymous donor, the scholarship is given preference to graduates from high schools in Cass County, Iowa. It considers academic achievement and financial need as primary criteria.
Charles Lee Butler was born in Fontanelle, Iowa, in 1902. He attended Drake University but left after one year to support his family. He later moved with his wife Florence to Atlantic in the early 1930s where he purchased an insurance agency and served as secretary of Cass Mutual Insurance Association. He was also on the Board of Directors for Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company until his death in 1968.
