Northwest Missouri State University is set to host its annual President’s Tree Lighting ceremony on Thursday, December 5, at the Thomas Gaunt House. The event marks the beginning of the holiday season on campus and invites community participation.
The program will be led by Northwest President Dr. Lance Tatum and first lady Jill Tatum, starting at 5 p.m. Attendees will hear remarks from President Tatum and Chloe DeVries, president of the Student Senate. Musical performances by the Madraliers and choir are also scheduled.
Post-ceremony activities include photo opportunities with Santa Claus and Bobby Bearcat, alongside refreshments at the Gaunt House.
“The President’s Tree Lighting is a tradition that brings our community together in a spirit of joy and unity,” stated President Tatum. “Each year, as we gather to celebrate, we’re reminded of the warmth and light this season brings, not just to our campus but to our hearts.”
This tradition has been part of Northwest's celebrations since 2009. The Thomas Gaunt House, located on Fourth Street at the south edge of the University campus, was built in the 1870s and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. It has been home to Northwest presidents since 1905.
