The Behavioral Sciences Association at Northwest Missouri State University is currently accepting art submissions for its annual "I Will Listen" event. This initiative aims to raise awareness about mental illnesses and promote mental health and well-being.
Art submissions are due by 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26. Interested participants can submit their artwork at the front desk of Colden Hall’s second-floor west wing. Each piece must include a title, along with the artist's name and school or community affiliation.
Eligible art forms include drawings, paintings, collage, comic strips, sewing, graphic design, pottery, sculpture, photography, mixed medium, music, and poetry. The contest is open to individuals aged five and older who may submit up to two pieces each.
Prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in each submission category. Additionally, a popular vote will determine winners for similar prizes.
The "I Will Listen" event is scheduled from 1 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 27 at the J.W. Jones Student Union's third floor. The event is free and open to the public.
Besides viewing the art exhibit, attendees can participate in a paint-and-sip activity and listen to speakers sharing their mental health journeys. An exercise room offering yoga sessions and various training activities will also be available.
Proceeds from the event will go to the National Alliance on Mental Illness with a fundraising goal of $500 set by the association.
“All aspects of the event will bring more awareness to mental health and the different experiences that people have because not all journeys are the same,” said Genevieve Plum, president of the Behavioral Sciences Association.
