Northwest Missouri State University's Percussion Ensemble is set to perform its first spring concert on Sunday, March 2. The event will take place at 2 p.m. in the Charles Johnson Theater located within the Olive DeLuce Fine Arts Building. Admission is free and open to all.
The concert program includes a range of musical styles and percussion combinations, such as cymbal and marimba duets, multi-percussion and snare drum duets, a xylophone solo accompanied by a marimba ensemble, a traditional Brazilian ensemble, and an innovative performance featuring only gestures and movements.
“This concert spans a variety of styles from ragtime to Brazilian Samba that audience members will enjoy,” stated Shelby Shelton, conductor of the Percussion Ensemble.
The ensemble consists of eight students ranging from freshmen to fifth-year seniors. Shelton joined Northwest last fall as a music lecturer in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. She has experience as an active performer, composer, and educator. Previously, she served as assistant director of athletic bands at Cumberland University in Tennessee and worked with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps’ percussion section for five seasons.
Shelton's teaching credentials include instructing various bands and ensembles like the Sacramento Mandarins, Madison Scouts, George Mason Indoor Percussion, Music City Drum Corps, and James Madison Marching Royal Dukes. She was also part of the Tennessee Titans Blue Crew drumline for three seasons.
She holds a master's degree in music performance with an emphasis on percussion from Middle Tennessee State University along with bachelor's degrees in music performance and English literature from Lindenwood University. Currently, she is pursuing a doctoral degree in percussion performance at James Madison University in Virginia.
A second spring concert by the Percussion Ensemble is scheduled for Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m., also in the Charles Johnson Theater.
