Northwest Missouri State University is continuing its efforts to help students prepare for their careers with a range of programs and events this fall. The university’s Career Services department is offering opportunities for networking, career development, and mock interviews aimed at giving students practical experience before they enter the workforce.

Career Services supports students in searching for jobs and internships, refining résumés and cover letters, developing networking strategies, and preparing for interviews. Staff are available to guide students on where to search for positions and how to connect with potential employers.

“We can see the job search angle a little bit differently,” said Hannah Christian, director of Career Services. “With more experience comes knowing where to look, knowing who to contact, knowing who in the alumni network already operates in that field and connecting them with that. A little bit of networking, a little bit of having a different perspective.”

The office is located on the first floor of the Administration Building and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Among the key events organized by Career Services is Career Day, which takes place each fall and spring semester. This year’s event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at the Carl and Cheryl Hughes Fieldhouse. Students will have an opportunity to meet with various employers as well as graduate school program representatives about internship and full-time employment options. There is no fee or registration required for attendance; students are encouraged to bring résumés and dress professionally.

Mock Interview Days provide another chance for students to engage directly with employers during scheduled sessions lasting 30 minutes—20 minutes dedicated to interviewing followed by 10 minutes of feedback on performance and résumé presentation. These sessions are tailored by academic major so that interview experiences align closely with student interests. Spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis based on employer availability; participants must submit their résumé at least one week prior.

Career Services also hosts Meet the Pros events throughout the semester across various majors and career fields. These panels give students direct access to professionals who answer questions about working in their respective industries.

To support professional appearance needs, Northwest offers the Career Closet at its Support Services Building—a resource providing clothing and accessories free of charge for all Northwest students pursuing career opportunities. The closet is open weekdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment.

In addition to these resources provided through Career Services, Northwest Missouri State University emphasizes profession-based learning across campus disciplines as part of its strategy to prepare graduates for employment or further education soon after graduation.

According to recent university data, within six months of graduation, 93 percent of bachelor’s degree recipients and 98 percent of master’s degree recipients either find employment or continue their studies.
