Northwest Missouri State University’s Tower Choir is scheduled to perform at Conception Abbey on Sunday, October 5. The concert will begin at 3 p.m. and is open to the public without charge. Conception Abbey is located approximately 17 miles southeast of Maryville.
The Tower Choir, directed by Dr. Adam Zrust, associate professor of music and chair of Northwest’s School of Fine and Performing Arts, is an audition-based choral group that regularly receives invitations to state conferences. The ensemble performs at a variety of venues throughout the region, including high schools, colleges, universities, churches, and other institutions.
Conception Abbey’s Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was completed in 1891 and has been recognized as a notable landmark in the four-state area. A significant restoration project was completed in 1999 at a cost of $9 million, which included preservation work on its historic Beuron murals.
The basilica also features an organ with 2,009 pipes. This instrument was designed specifically for Conception Abbey by M. L. Bigelow and Company from American Fork, Utah, and finished in 1997. While the wood pipes were made by Bigelow, most metal pipes came from Jacques Stinkens in Zeist, Holland. Some components date back to 1911 and were repurposed from an earlier organ used in Salt Lake City’s Assembly Hall.
Dr. Adam Zrust stated that the choir is looking forward to returning to this venue for their upcoming performance.
