Dr. Joy Daggs, a professor of communication at Northwest Missouri State University, has been recognized with the Iowa Communication Association’s (ICA) Citation Award. The award was presented to Daggs on September 26 during the ICA luncheon and business meeting in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Citation Award is the highest honor given by the ICA. It is board-nominated and recognizes individuals who have shown exceptional service to communication or performing arts in Iowa over an extended period.
Daggs began her involvement with the ICA as a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa in 2001 and delivered her first academic presentation at the association's conference in 2002. She has remained an active member since then, valuing the organization's emphasis on collegial relationships and teaching methods.
She has served as president of ICA from 2022 to 2024 and currently serves as past-president. Previously, she was a member at large on the executive board. In addition to her work with ICA, Daggs represents Iowa on the Central States Communication Association’s States Advisory Committee and has held various roles within both Central States Communication Association and National Communication Association. From 2017 to 2019, she was a member at large on the Central States Communication Association’s Executive Board. She has also advocated for state associations by ensuring they have space in exhibit halls to share information.
Daggs holds a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Missouri-Columbia, a master’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and a bachelor’s degree from William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri. Her research interests include crisis communication, teaching communication, organizational impression management, and academic mentorship.
"I am honored to receive this recognition from my colleagues," Daggs said upon receiving the award.
