Bulldogs Can't Breakthrough Against Missouri Southern

Leadoff hitter Cassie Smith went 4-for-6 on the afternoon but in the end the Missouri Southern Lions took two from the Truman Softball team in Joplin on Sunday by scores of 14-5 and 10-2.

The Bulldogs with head to the Spring Games in Orlando, Florida starting on Friday for eight games in the Sunshine State. 

Missouri Southern 14, Truman State 5

The Lions scored 14 times on 11 hits and in each inning as they ran away from the Bulldogs in the opener 14-5. MSSU sent 11 hitters to the plate in the opening stanza and got a grand slam to turn a 4-0 start to an 8-0 lead.

The Bulldogs answered back in the second with Brieanna Klein leading off with a double and scored on an error in the next at bat by Nina Fenasci

Later in the inning, Macy Taylor struck a two-run single plating Fenasci and Brooke Nutter.

Southern got another slam in the third to go up 13-3.

Cassie Smith drove in Taylor and Madi McCarty with a two-out single up the middle in the fourth.

Smith, Nutter and Taylor each collected a pair of hits in the first game.

Missouri Southern 10, Truman State 2

Alex Beard gave the Bulldogs an early lead in the first with a two-out single up the middle to score Cassie Smith. 

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 in the third when Mackenzie West drove a ball down the left field line scoring Smith. Beard followed with a single to right center but West was gunned down at the plate to end the inning.

The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the third on a sac fly followed later by a wild pitch.

Southern loaded the bases in the fourth and scored five times to take a 7-2 lead. 

A pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth ended the game. 

Smith and Beard accounted for four of the six Bulldog hits.
