Northwest Missouri State University students recently visited the capitol building in Jefferson City to advocate for their institution during the Student Senate’s annual legislative reception. The students engaged with state lawmakers, sharing Northwest’s story and seeking support for University programs and campus upgrades.

During the visit, Elizabeth Motazedi, the president of Northwest’s student body, expressed her pride in representing the university and advocating for its importance. She mentioned, “It made me proud to be a Bearcat. It was great to represent Northwest and advocate for a place that really just means so much.”

Callie Spunaugle, an agricultural business major and junior class representative in the Student Senate, highlighted the value of connecting with state lawmakers and ensuring that student voices are heard. She stated, “I am so thankful to be able to be in the position to speak with state lawmakers about supporting Northwest.”

Jillian McNamara, the executive secretary of the Student Senate, emphasized the impact of advocacy and making connections during the legislative reception. McNamara noted, “Advocating for your needs and for what you care about can indeed promote change.”

Overall, the students found the experience inspiring and felt more connected to their state as active citizens. Motazedi shared, “A lot of students, I think, felt very inspired the same way I did. They felt more in touch with their state and as citizens, especially citizens who vote, citizens who go to a public university.”

The visit to the capitol building provided Northwest students with the opportunity to engage with legislators, share their perspectives, and advocate for their university, demonstrating the importance of civic engagement and active participation in the legislative process.
