In June, Northwest Missouri State University Professor of Music, Dr. William Richardson, participated in multiple musical performances, including the Glenn Miller Birthplace Society Big Band and the Phil Collins Experience. His activities exemplify how Northwest music faculty integrate performance experiences into their teaching.
"As teachers who are active performing musicians, we can tie in situations directly to our own personal experiences," Richardson stated. He emphasized that practical skills such as playing in tune, balance, technique, and professionalism enhance student learning.
Dr. Joseph Tomasso, an assistant professor at Northwest since 2017, regularly performs with symphonies in Topeka, Omaha, Springfield, and St. Joseph and recently began playing with the Wichita Grand Opera. "I realized I’m creating an environment where someone is falling in love with music," Tomasso said about his transition from performer to educator.
Dr. William Sutton joined Northwest's faculty in 2022 and teaches low brass and music theory while performing with ensembles like the Kansas City Symphony and the Orchestra of Northern New York. "Performing with other ensembles presents unique challenges," Sutton noted. He believes his professional engagements keep him energized for classroom instruction.
Dr. Paul Hindemith has been singing professionally for over 20 years and teaches vocal performance at Northwest since 2022. His recent engagements include performances with The Opus 76 Quartet and directing "The Spongebob Musical" in St. Joseph. "For who I am, I have to do both [teaching and performing]," Hindemith said.
Richardson’s involvement with the Phil Collins Experience stands out due to its extensive schedule and unique production elements. He highlights that positive energy brought by individuals adds value to group performances.
