Northwest Missouri State University is preparing for its annual Homecoming celebration, themed "A Century of Homecomings," scheduled from October 13 to 19. The event will include a variety of activities and events designed for students, employees, alumni, and friends of the university.
The festivities will commence on Sunday, October 13, with the hanging of banners at the J.W. Jones Student Union. The week-long celebration will conclude on Saturday, October 19, with the Homecoming football game against the University of Central Missouri at Bearcat Stadium.
Significant events during the week include the Homecoming parade on Fourth Street featuring over 100 entries such as marching bands and floats. It begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday and concludes at Main Street. Other highlights are the Bell of '48 ringing, Variety Show, International Flag-Raising Ceremony, and a reunion for the Class of 1974.
Alumni are invited to gather before the parade at the Michael L. Faust Center for Alumni and Friends starting at 8 a.m., where they can collect commemorative buttons and ribbons marking their reunion year.
This year's individual inductees into Northwest's Hall of Fame include Erik Petersen (football), Ryan Jones (football), Kira Lazenby (soccer), Kendra Smith Porter (softball), Amanda Urquhart (softball), along with the 2007 and 2008 Bearcat football teams.
Throughout Homecoming week, various athletic contests will take place including soccer matches and golf tournaments. Student organizations will also participate in traditional contests like banner decorating and Donation Creation Contest.
The Homecoming Variety Show is set for Thursday evening in the Ron Houston Center for Performing Arts, showcasing performances by individuals and student groups. Voting for Homecoming King and Queen will conclude prior to this event.
Friday marks Walkout Day when classes are canceled allowing students to engage in campus activities including an International Flag-Raising Ceremony.
Homecoming traditions date back to Northwest's first general Homecoming in October 1924 which included social gatherings, football games, dances, and other community events that have evolved over time into today's celebrations.
