Students at Northwest Missouri State University engaged in diverse internships during the summer, gaining professional skills and experience across various fields. From working in behavioral science at alternative housing centers to exploring natural science in outdoor environments, these internships provided valuable learning opportunities.
Northwest students participated in internships related to graphic design, theater companies, athletic organizations, museums, and more. Some traveled abroad to countries like South Africa and Germany for their experiences. The university encourages students to pursue hands-on experiences outside the classroom as part of their education.
Travis Kline, Northwest’s assistant director of career services, stated: “Internships are a great way for students to get hands-on, profession-based learning experiences and build their résumés. They are also a great opportunity for employers to recruit talent and increase awareness of their brand on campus.” He also recommended completing at least one internship before graduating.
Several students shared insights from their summer internships:
Burroughs interned at Quanada in Quincy, Illinois, supporting domestic abuse victims. She said her experience "solidified that I am in the right major" and highlighted the importance of advocacy.
Grant Shouse worked with a farmer in Germany through Experience International. He found confidence by relying on himself and recommended such experiences for agricultural students.
Emma Huettner interned at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, feeding marine animals like Harold the loggerhead sea turtle. She noted that being an aquarist requires physical fitness due to labor-intensive tasks.
Malerie Schutt interned with Integrated Breeders in Texas, gaining experience with cattle reproduction services. She appreciated networking within the industry.
Joslyn Scheer applied her business management knowledge as a social media intern with Black Pony Brewing Company. She valued real-world applications of her coursework.

Brylee Yantz worked as a research intern with the University of Minnesota on invasive plant management. Her fieldwork complemented her academic studies.
Kolin Westhoff interned with Textron Aviation in aircraft service sales. His passion for aviation was further ignited through this experience.
Maggie Begbie worked at Great Lakes Sire Service, where she learned about livestock semen processing. She found value in practical experience aligned with classroom learning.
Elaina Houston completed an internship at The Muny theater in St. Louis, focusing on scenic design and stage lighting.
Kelby Derr worked with the Kansas City Royals’ game entertainment team and is currently interning with the Kansas City Chiefs. He emphasized networking's importance learned through these roles.
Alexandria Gilbert served as an environmental scientist intern at Felsburg Holt & Ullevig. Her role involved preparing biological assessments and conducting wetland surveys.
These internships have helped students apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios while building networks that could aid their future careers.
