Northwest Missouri State University is preparing to celebrate Women’s History Month in March with various educational activities. These events include the annual women's summit, aimed at recognizing influential women on campus and within the community.

Dr. Jessie Peter, a senior coordinator of diversity at Northwest, remarked, “It is a great way to celebrate the phenomenal women leaders around us who positively impact Northwest and the Maryville community.”

The summit is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25, at the J.W. Jones Student Union. The event will feature mini-learning sessions and personal stories designed to provide leadership strategies and growth opportunities. Additionally, there will be a mini-market showcasing women-owned businesses from Maryville and student organizations.

During the summit, individuals who have shown outstanding dedication in supporting and advocating for their communities will be honored with the Northwest Women’s Leadership Awards. Nominations are open for categories including student, community member, staff, and faculty until Friday, March 7.

Jill Brown will deliver a keynote speech during a luncheon at the summit. Brown serves as Northwest’s assistant vice president of university advancement and has been involved with Northwest since 2017.

Additional events for Women’s History Month include screenings of "Live to Lead," featuring prominent figures like Ruth Bader Ginsburg on March 4 and Greta Thunberg on March 27 at the Student Engagement Center.

The origins of National Women’s History Month trace back to 1981 when it was initially celebrated as a week-long event before being expanded by Congress in 1987 to encompass all of March.

Northwest also plans other activities throughout March in its Student Engagement Center located within the Student Union building.
