Northwest Missouri State University has established a connection with Hebei Normal University in China, fostering cultural and academic exchanges. In December, 17 students and six faculty members from Northwest traveled to China to engage with their counterparts at Hebei Normal. The visit aimed to demonstrate both institutions' commitment to student mobility, facilitated by the Global Cross Border Education Institute (GCBEI).

“It was a life-changing experience, not only for the students but for the faculty and myself,” said one participant. “We built some very good relationships, a great understanding between our two institutions, and I think we’re really looking forward to that relationship coming to fruition.”

The Northwest delegation included Dr. Nathan Eloe, Dr. Nissa Ingraham, Dr. Elise Hepworth, Dr. Tim Wall, Dr. Taylor Harrison, and Connie Murphy.

During their seven-day stay in China, participants visited cultural sites and engaged in various activities including a "table tennis magical tour." Students from both universities discussed their studies in math, education, and computer science.

Emily McMurray expressed her appreciation for meeting university students within her program: “I thought it was interesting just how similar we were... My Northwest peers and I truly have more similarities than differences with our counterparts in Hebei.”

Ross noted similarities in teaching methods: “The actual experience there seems very similar to ours where they’re teaching teachers.”

Zane Papek shared his experience of overcoming language barriers: “Even with a heavy language barrier... Both of these experiences were such small fractions of our trip but really meant a lot to me.” He added that the trip broadened his understanding of culture.

Dr. Nissa Ingraham highlighted the significance of personal connections made during the visit: “To see our students connecting with their students at a person-to-person level was just amazing...”

For many participants, visiting historical sites like the Great Wall was significant. Papek remarked on its grandeur: “No picture really does The Great Wall justice until you’re there.”

Cultural exchange events featured performances by Hebei students including a traditional dragon dance. Dr. Elise Hepworth performed an Italian art song as part of a musical program.

Samantha Westover reflected on her experiences: “It makes me appreciate what we have... My greatest takeaway is that it’s important to have an open mind and treat everyone with respect and kindness.”
