Michael Johnson returns to lead university advancement at Northwest Missouri State
Michael Johnson, a familiar face at Northwest Missouri State University who has previously led its alumni relations and fundraising units, is returning to the institution as its vice president of university advancement and executive director. Northwest’s Board of Regents approved the hiring during its closed session Thursday. Johnson’s employment begins on August 5, and he will serve as a member of the administration.

Professor honored by Glenn Miller Birthplace Society with lifetime achievement award
Dr. William Richardson, a professor of music at Northwest Missouri State University, was recently honored for his service to a historical society and festival honoring a legendary band leader and musician. The Glenn Miller Birthplace Society (GMBS), during its annual event on June 7 in Clarinda, Iowa, presented Richardson with its lifetime achievement award. This award is given to society employees and other individuals who have contributed to the society’s mission and programs.

Northwest graduate begins career as special education teacher
Noah Iwig never anticipated a career in teaching until he explored Northwest Missouri State University’s teacher preparation program. This fall, Iwig will commence his role as a special education teacher in the United Community School District in Boone County, Iowa. A native of Urbandale, Iowa, Iwig graduated from Northwest in April with bachelor’s degrees.

Psychology students present research at national conferences
Eleven Northwest Missouri State University psychology students honed their research presentation skills and networked with peers by attending national conferences this spring. In April, the students, under the advisement of psychology faculty Dr. Amy Barton, Dr. Jason McCain, Dr. Chase O’Gwin, and Dr. Jacob Tengelsen, attended the Midwestern Psychological Association (MPA) Conference in Chicago and the American Psychological Association Division 24 conference at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Northwest Missouri State University's dual credit program receives national reaccreditation
The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) has announced the reaccreditation of concurrent enrollment programs offered by 10 colleges and universities, including Northwest Missouri State University. These programs provide college credit-bearing courses to high school students taught by college-approved high school teachers.

Kawasaki continues scholarship support for northwest Missouri State University
Kawasaki Motors Manufacturing Corporation, a significant economic contributor in northwest Missouri for over 30 years and the county’s largest employer, is continuing its support of Northwest Missouri State University through funding aimed at assisting students and programs. This spring, Kawasaki donated $40,000 to support two scholarship programs as well as the University’s Visiting Writers Series.

Dr. Elyssa Ford, an associate professor of history at Northwest Missouri State University, has been recognized for her article in a peer-reviewed journal publishing scholarly work about the American Midwest. Ford was announced on May 28 as the John E. Miller Prize recipient for the best article of 2023 in Middle West Review.

Northwest Missouri State University has introduced the first Buffalo Wild Wings Go on a college campus, providing students and the public with access to the chain's chicken wings and other menu items for dine-in and takeout. The establishment opened on April 29 in The Station, adjacent to the high-rise residence halls on the west side of the university campus.

Couple establishes annual scholarship supporting future business students
A new Northwest Missouri State University scholarship honors the impact the institution’s business program made on one couple and their family while offering support to future students interested in business. Starting in the fall, the Hunsicker Family Scholarship will be awarded annually to a Northwest undergraduate student pursuing a major in business. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must also be enrolled full-time at Northwest and maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Northwest Missouri State University tops national campus waste reduction competition
Northwest Missouri State University has emerged as the top contender among colleges and universities nationwide in recycling electronic items this spring. The final tally of the 2024 competition reveals that Northwest secured first place in the category of Electronics Recycling Per Capita. The university recycled 3.9 pounds per capita, submitting a total of 20,343 pounds, equivalent to over 10 tons. The recycled items encompassed batteries, lamps, televisions, monitors, laptops and other computer equipment.
